We all need passive income these days in any form. So I’m going to tell you how to set up Google AdSense on your website, so you can get a little payment now and then, simply by posting content on the site on a regular basis.
You may have noticed those article sites where, when you try and read the text, these annoying ads prevent you from doing so. Well, that’s PPC, otherwise known as Pay Per Click advertising, which is what Google AdSense is. You don’t have to show ads in an annoying spot on your site. You can decide how many ads to run, and where. Let’s explore how to do that.
How Does Google AdSense Work?
You have website publishers, and you have advertisers who want their little ads showing up on websites. Google is the middle man.
If you’re someone who would like their ad to show up on OTHER PEOPLE’S WEBSITES, then sign up for the Google AdWords program. This is pay-to-play.
If you’re a BLOGGER, or you routinely post articles and other types of content on your website, then sign up for Google AdSense. You do not have to pay, in this case, because your site will host Google ads that people pay to run.
How to Sign Up for Google AdSense
- Create a Google email address that you’d like to be the hub of your Google AdSense account.
- While logged into that email account, visit google . com / adsense (I’m leaving spaces so that link doesn’t create a live preview on my post here).
- You’ll be asked to create a Google AdSense account, and log in.
- After you log in, click around the Google AdSense site to see what’s what.
- Visit the SITES tab and enter the URL of your website where you’d like to run ads.
- After that, you’ll be required to do a few things in order to be approved (see below).
Before You Can Run Ads, You Must Verify Your Website
You must verify your site with Google. You have several ways of doing this. One is by copying and pasting a code snippet that Google AdSense provides there in your account for you, into your website’s header.
Another way is by downloading a text file that Google provides, and then uploading it to your website’s server.
A third way is by copying and pasting a little metatag into the main header of your website.
On WordPress sites, this is a bit tricky. You’ll need to click on APPEARANCE>THEME FILE EDITOR, then go to the HEADER template and paste the code anywhere between the <head> and </head> tags.
I was led to believe, based on the wording that Google AdSense chose to explain this, that you can choose from one of these 3 methods of site verification. But today, I was only able to get one of my sites verified after doing ALL THREE of the above mentioned things.
After you do that, go back into your AdSense account and tell them you did it and you’re ready to verify. Then, wait for Google to verify your site.
Once it’s verified, you’ll see three green checkmarks in the spot where verification is done in your AdSense account. Wahoo!
Next, Google will want to check for high quality content being published on your site. They want to see that you publish regularly, and that it’s good, original content.
It may take some time before Google gives you the OK, and you might get a request from them to “fix” the content on your site.
This could mean continuing to post more great content, removing content that was taken from another live site on the web, and this sort of thing.
You won’t really know what you’re supposed to be fixing, because they won’t actually tell you. Instead, you must guess. Fun, right? 😀
How to Paste Google AdSense Code into Your Website to Run Ads
After Google AdSense approves your site to run ads, you’ll be given the OK. Then you get to grab the code snippet to paste into different spots on your website. Google makes it super easy to do this.
To paste a code snippet into a WordPress blog post, you must be using the TEXT editor, NOT the visual editor.
After you paste the code into a post, click PUBLISH and wait a bit. It will take some time before the Google ad content serves up from their site to yours.
If you only see a blank space on your website where the code was supposed to show up, give it some time.
Check back later, and if you still don’t see the ad serving up, redo what you did.
Where to Place Google AdSense Code on Your Website
There are several spots on your website where you can copy and paste AdSense code snippets.
- You can paste it right into each post (in the TEXT editor, as mentioned)
- You can paste it into the site’s header
- You can paste it into the sidebar
- You can paste it into each page
- You can paste it into the footer.
There’s also an option to tell Google AdSense to generate ads for you, and decide where they will show up on your site.
This is the easiest method, but you also lose the option to choose where the ads show up.
Why Run Google Ads on Your Site?
Each time your site visitor clicks on a Google Ad from your site, you get a little tiny payment.
The amount you earn depends on how many visitors your site receives.
You do not get paid to click your own ads. Google knows. 🙂
To check how much you have accrued in your Google AdSense account, log into your Google AdSense account using the email you signed up with.
Once the amount reaches their payment threshold, you’ll receive a payout from Google.
How to Obtain Payment from Google AdSense
Visit your AdSense account settings to set your preferred payout method. You can choose PayPal, direct deposit, or a mailed check.
If your site has lots of traffic, views, and clicks, you can make some nice cash by running Google ads.
But don’t think that you’ll be paying your monthly bills on this money, unless you plan to build a massive website that gets mad traffic.
If you’re a blogger, you’ll probably get a little special gift from Google every few months.
Why not do it? The hardest part is the setup.
